allow constant patterns (which don't bind any variables) in function arguments. also fixes a bug where functions from a temporary source (e.g., an expression or envvals) would be overwritten with their arguments during a call (broke recursion)

fix a bug where a successful match followed by an unsuccessful match would cause the next case to fail because the input register to the first match would be overwritten, which needs to be reused by the next case
